St Mary's Catholic Primary School

In Jesus' footsteps we learn, love and grow together to be the best that we can be!

Class 8

Croeso i Dosbarth Wyth

Welcome to Class 8, Year 6

Class Teacher: Mrs Thomas

Teaching Assistants: Mr Mackie (Monday - Wednesday)

An important year lies ahead as pupils complete their studies in St Mary's before moving on to new horizons. Punctuality and excellent attendance are essential if children are to reach their full potential so if possible, please keep appointments in school time to a minimum. Year 6 always offers exciting opportunities for pupils and we are looking forward to working, learning and laughing together.

As always, please arrange to see me if you have any concerns about your child.

Mrs Thomas

Welsh College of Music and Drama

3.06.15 Year 6 had a wonderful time in a music and drama workshop with students from WCMD this week. We all enjoyed an amazing performance in the afternoon and say a big Thank You to the performers.

PC Steve

10.06.15 PC Steve came to talk to us about cyber bullying and gave some excellent advice about on-line safety. The CEOP website run by the police is a useful source for parents and children should you have any concerns.

A Winter's Tale

18-06-15 We had a wonderful experience in Thompson's Park as guests of the Take Flight Theatre Company who performed an enchanting version of Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale.

We had a wonderful time climbing, playing in mud, zooming through the air on zip wires and sailing on the River Wye as well as staying up too late and eating sweets! Take a look at the gallery to see photographs and videos.

More than Mods and Rockers

Our current Imaginative Learning Project is More Than Mods and Rockers.

This project has a history focus and teaches children about life in the 1960s including significant social, cultural and political events of the time. At the heart of this project, children will develop script writing skills and develop additional skills in writing newspaper reports of historical events. To begin, we are going to try out some tie dying so please dig out an old white, cotton t-shirt! Many thanks.

Your child will be issued with the following:

  • Homework bag (to ensure books are kept clean and dry)
  • A spelling booklet to practise for weekly spelling tests
  • A reading record card and own choice / scheme library book
  • A ruled exercise book (English, miscellaneous)
  • A squared exercise book ( Mathematics)
  • A personal diary

It would be greatly appreciated if you could help to develop independence by encouraging your son or daughter to look after this equipment and return it as required.

Homework will USUALLY be set on Fridays and return will be expected on Wednesday morning.

Spelling and Maths tests USUALLY take place on Fridays.

PE Kit is required on Monday and  Friday. Pupils are expected to CHANGE from their uniform into kit and should not wear kit to school. If your child is unable to participate in PE please be kind enough to put the reason in writing ensuring that the note is signed and dated.

Mrs Nihan will teach Science and a Maths lesson on Monday mornings.

Our current RE topics are Witnesses, Healing and Common Good. We will also learn about the Five Pillars of Islam.

Our Imaginative Learning Project (ILP) for this term is 'Skin Deep'.  We will be basing the majority of our Geography, History, Art, Design Technology and ICT in this context.

In Welsh, we will continue to focus on developing dialogues using a range of sentence patterns and tenses. We are aiming to use more incidental Welsh around the classroom so please encourage your children to share any words or phrases with you at home too!

Welsh Speaker of the Week

 10.07.15                  Ada Wegeriek

10.07.15               Sean Ackland (for making us laugh with his sense of humour!)
